We all know that tanning in the sun or at the tanning salon may be bad for our skin and our health. However, if you got a little glow this summer and crave that look for the gloomy months ahead, we’ve got you covered. All you need is a little self-tanner!  With so many different options to choose from, you won’t have to worry about looking orange this fall season.

When looking to use a self-tanner, you generally will have two different options. You can opt for bronzers that wash off with soap and water or sunless tanners that stain your skin and fade as your dead skin cells naturally fall off. Bronzers are best for a short-term glow and sunless tanners are best for a long-term tan look.

This fall, avoid the tanning salon and the risks involved and try a self-tanner instead. Here are some of the best types to try:

  • As you do your makeup, if you just want a little glow and color here and there, try bronzers. Bronzers generally come in powder, gel, stick or spray forms and wash off with soap and water. Bronzing powders are great for beginners because you can build on the color, whether you want a little glow or a deep tan. It can also add a highlighting sparkle to your skin.
  • Bronzing gels can be a little more difficult to apply, but if you practice, you can achieve an even, darker and longer lasting bronzed look.
  • Spray bronzers are great if you want to get a subtle hint of color or spray on your entire body. You can also try a stick bronzer, especially if you want a tan glow on your legs or to cover up scars or spider veins. Try using a translucent setting powder over the stick bronzer application to ensure it stays on all night long.
  • If you’d like a more all body glow that stays on for a while, try sunless tanners. They come in many forms such as lotions, sprays, gels, mousses and even sheets that you rub on your skin to apply color. You can also try sunless tanners that gradually build color, so you don’t run the risk of applying unevenly or turning an undesirable orange color. These are great for beginners.

Remember that practice makes perfect when it comes to trying bronzers or self-tanners. Ask a friend to help you get the hard to reach spots or ensure you are applying it evenly. Generally, it takes a few hours to reach the full-color potential so give it time before applying more color if you feel you’d like a deeper and darker color.
